In her workshop, in Belle-île-en-Mer, Marine uses her favourite tools – usually used for woodwork – to create jewels. She evokes her skills, her crops and the development of her projects. © Christine Réfalo   Where do you work? I have a small workshop with a shop space in Palais, the port of arrival in Belle-île-en-Mer. It is a beautiful room full of light and, therefore, I have a workshop space, a shop space and there are also the sculptures of my life partner Pablo Castillo, who works elsewhere. This configuration allows me to work and to receive people. The workshop is opened, it has a big ‘U’ shape at the back of the room so visitors can observe when I work. It is a huge clutter but people are never shocked, it contrasts with the rest of the room but they like it.   © Nathan Cauvin   What…Continue Reading

Marine Cauvin is an ornamentalist sculptor and art turner in wood. With Marine, jewelry making has started as a convenience and has progressively become obvious. Her playground was easily found. Her approach is resolutely contemporary, she sublimates natural elements gathered during her walks. Here is an overview of her work. © Christine Réfalo Could you please introduce yourself? My name is Marine Cauvin, I am 31 and I have been making jewelry for six years. I started as an autodidact. I live on an island called Belle-île-en-mer, in France. © Fabien Guiraud How would you define your universe? I work with things I pick so my creative universe is related to natural materials, to crops, to seasons, to what I gather and what people bring me. It is a slighltly peculiar approach because it is really according what I find. I am trained to work with wood, I am an…Continue Reading

To conclude this interview, Alix gives us more details about her tastes. She also talks about the difficulties of her activity: to distinguish yourself, not to underestimate yourself, to be multi-skilled, etc. Photo : © Tony Trichanh Can you name 3 jewelry designers you like? Sophie Hanagarth, professor at the School of Decorative Arts in Strasbourg, her work is strong and quite rough, I love it. Moreover, there are former students such as Marine Dominiczak (award winner of the ‘Jeune Création Métiers d’art’ Prize in 2016), Annie Sibert or Marion Delarue who accumulates an impressive know-how, acquired in several Asian countries.   Photo : © Tony Trichanh Do you have favourite major artists? It has always been a hard question for me… I admire a lot of artists, in different fields, but I wouldn’t be able to a few ones, as a reference. That being said, in the jewelry world,…Continue Reading

During this workshop visit, Alix talks about her fascination with the contrast between the gesture roughness and the result delicacy in her work, her tools and her materials. Photo : © My Sen Where do you work? I work in a small workshop that used to be my father’s medical practice. It is located in an area that will be destroyed, I can make noise without bothering my neighbours to much! Inside, there are many things from the website ‘Le bon coin’ (especially among my tools) and from Emmaüs. I tried to create a cosy atmosphere, there is an illuminated showcase and many plants. Photo : © My Sen What is your favourite tool? Why? It is difficult to choose…but I would say the hammer! There are so beautiful ones. I like the contrast between the gesture and the tool that seem brutal and the delicate results they provide. Photo…Continue Reading
