Immense patience is requested to create Kapara’s fabrics. Justine reveals the workings of leather weaving in this second article dedicated to the savoir-faire. Where do you work? Until now, I was working in Brussels. I am now returning to my rods because my workshop will be soon settled in Nantes. It will be surrounded by other workshops at the Atelier 67. A new start with many beautiful projects. What is your favorite machine ?  Surprising, a weaving loom. I install threads called warps on it at right angles. Once each thread is installed side by side, I can start to weave by including the weft at right angle. How do you choose your raw materials?  The different leathers come from France. I only choose downgraded leathers (with holes, spots, scratches), it doesn’t bother me at all because leather is converted into lace right away. Justine Bossé has always been passionate by fashion and arts, she has discovered leather weaving during her studies and decided to launch her own brand called Kapara more than two years ago. She produces fabrics which are reinterpreted by other creators and integrated to their own pieces. Justine tells us more details about this difficult and fascinating process. Could you please introduce yourself? I am a textile designer, specialized in leather weaving. I have always appreciated materials and savoir faire. Snem and Didem have no limits, they like to research, learn and reinterpret traditional codes. Let’s discover their working process. Where are you working ? We have our own ateliers in Istanbul and Ankara. We are working at our ateliers to produce works by traditional jewelry making techniques. If we need to work with industrial machines we use our friend Erdal Duman’s sculpture atelier. How and when did you start jewelry ? We were always making our own jewelries but not consciously. When I was at university in Ankara I met with a contemporary artist group who canalize me to the contemporary art field.
