Do you have favorite jewels? What is their story?

My favorite jewel is a ring my father offered to my mother when they met.

In white gold and sapphire, it is very contemporary and Japanese. He found it in New York, the designer is Kyo or Kio, I can’t read the inscription and I have never been able to find the designer…

What are the two main qualities to be a good jewelry designer?

Technique and determination. For now, I am not a jeweler, I am only a jewelry designer and I lack skills to realize some of my ideas. In this field, learning is infinite. Determination is important because there are MANY designers.

What would you advise to a new designer?

To learn, in many fields (textile, metal, ceramic, crimp, management, marketing, etc.) and to be curious.

How do you approach designers to ask them to teach you some techniques?

Jewelers are not always easy to contact. The field is not closed but there are so many new designers on the market that jewelers and craftsmen can sometimes be suspicious. It is a slightly secret world, it is the big family of jewelers. It is hard to approach them but I am now able to obtain some contacts and meet open-minded people.

They don’t want to train me but they accept to meet me to teach me some stuff. In exchange, I provide services, I just want to learn.

I don’t steal ideas because I already got my own, I just lack technical skills. Anyway, their knowledge is not a secret anymore, unfortunately. We are part of a world where everything is quickly transmitted. I just want to work with craftsmen who have known everything for the past 40 years and have many secrets!

Why this job?

I know where I go every morning when I wake up. Not everyone can say the same thing. It is rewarding because I make stuff with my hands. It works or it doesn’t but, anyway, I’ve made it. Knowing where I go, maybe not how nor how fast but I know where I go. I am very stressful about the future.
